What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is the procedure of using relaxation techniques and suggestion to put a person in a highly suggestive state of mind. By shutting down conscious thought and opening up the brain to the power of suggestion, many feats are accomplished, including increased pain tolerance, physical and emotional healing, weight loss and even the cessation of harmful habits.
The method
Many hypnotists use an object for a subject to focus on intently as he or she slips into a hypnotized state. By using a calm voice and putting a potential subject in a relaxing and comfortable position, the hypnotist "places the person under" and can then suggest actions or ask questions. It is even used as an alternative to anesthesia during surgery.
Uses
Hypnotism has proven highly successful as a form of therapy for victims of many crimes, including rape and other sex abuse. By opening up the mind to suggestion, many details are recalled that were otherwise inaccessible. As a diet and weight loss aid, hypnotism can help to reduce the level of hunger or remove a person's aversion to exercise. Using hypnotism to convince a person they no longer need nicotine or derive pleasure from smoking is a great way to help someone quit that is otherwise unsuccessful.
Hypnotism has a wide variety of applications and uses; it can help people emotionally and physically without harmful or negative side effects. If there is a problem with remembering a specific event or stopping a bad habit, hypnotism is a safe and effective way to solve the problem quickly and easily.
