How to Earn a Teaching Degree Online

It is possible to earn a teaching degree online, and it can even cost less than earning the degree traditionally. Using a combination of CLEP tests, free and cheap online college courses and online distance learning courses, you can earn a teaching degree from an accredited institution.
First: Make a plan
Getting a teaching degree online is not difficult, but it does require planning. Basically, you need to get a bachelor degree in most any subject, then take the required courses for the teaching certificate. You need to make sure the college is not only accredited but also has a good reputation. There are many online schools that are accredited but are known as "diploma mills," and schools usually do not hire teachers with a degree from diploma mills. Once you decide on a couple of possible schools, learn the degree requirements so you know what classes to take.
Second: Take the CLEP
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows you to study for an exam on your own, and then take the exam. Once you pass a CLEP exam, you are awarded college credit. Most colleges and universities accept CLEP exam credits though the number of credits you receive varies depending on the school. You can earn about one years worth of credits through CLEP exams.
Third: Use ALEKS
ALEKS is an online math program that offers college level math courses for college credit. The cost is $20 a month and you can apply for college credit for eligible math courses as soon as you achieve a score of 70 percent or higher. Some colleges accept enough of these credits for you to complete the math requirements of your degree this way.
Fourth: Transfer credits
Start taking online classes at the school of your choice, and then transfer the credits you have earned through CLEP, ALEKS and other online classes. Once you meet the requirements of the degree you can graduate.
Fifth: Get teaching certificate
Talk to the school and find out what is required to get a teaching degree. Now that you have a degree, a few online classes and a test is all that is usually required to get your teaching license.
